What Are Digital Products?
Understanding Digital Products and the Future
Imagine being able to transform your knowledge, creativity, and passions into something tangible that people can use online. That’s precisely what digital products are.
They are products that exist in digital form and are sold and consumed over the internet. No storage, no shipping costs – just pure value delivered directly into the hands of your customers.
Why Create and Sell Digital Products?
Ask yourself: Do you want to constantly trade your time and effort for money, or do you want to generate income that flows even when you’re not actively working? Digital products offer the opportunity to build passive income. You invest time and effort in their creation, and then these products can be sold repeatedly without you having to be present every time.

Step-By-Step: How to Start
You might be wondering now:
“How do you go about it step by step, from the idea to the product?”
I’ve summarized the most important steps for you. I guarantee that if you set clear goals and proceed step by step, you’ll not only be able to successfully create your first digital product but also find a lot of joy in the process.
As a side effect, your self-confidence will also increase. Because realizing that all you lacked was determination and that you are capable of so much more than you believed has an immediate positive impact on your self-image and self-confidence.
- Gathering Ideas – Take some time initially and create a collection of topics that align with your skills or passionate interests. Consider what problems you could solve or what needs you see in these areas. Brainstorm various ideas for digital products that could address these issues or fulfill these needs.
- Niche Research & Target Audience Identification – Choose a niche from your ideas that aligns with your skills and interests. Identify you Target Audience. Who are the people who would benefit from your product? Define their characteristics, interests, and pain points.
- Needs and Competitive Analysis – Examine the needs of your target audience. What challenges do they face? What questions are they seeking answers to? Conduct a competitive analysis to determine which similar products are already on the market. Identify opportunities to differentiate your product from the competition or even create a unique selling proposition.
- Define Your Product Idea – Decide which digital product best suits your target audience and expertise. Could it be an e-book, an online course, a template, or something else?
- Creating the Product – Begin the actual creation of your digital product. Write the text, create graphics, or multimedia content. Ensure high quality and valuable content that meets the needs of your target audience.
- Testing and Uploading – Edit the content of your product according to the chosen format (PDF, video, audio, etc.). Make sure everything works correctly (plays, opens how it’s supposed to, downloads, etc.)
- Prepare for Marketing and Launch – Create a sales page or website for your product. Plan the launch by creating marketing materials and developing a strategy for promotion.
- Launch and Sales – Launch your product and promote it through your social media channels, email lists, and other platforms. Keep an eye on sales numbers and feedback.
Well, at this point, I want to congratulate you because you probably have already mentally outlined a rough plan for your first digital product.
Don’t forget,
Success comes only when actions follow desires!
To make the process easier for you, I’ve compiled checklists on the following pages. Print them out and fill them in.
Research Niche
What is your area of expertise? What have you specialized in?
Your skills/strengths
Your passion
The needs of your target audience
List some ways in which you can help solve their problems.
Creating Your Product
You’re going to decide on your first product. There are MANY to choose from, including some art-related products.
Which platform will you create your digital products? Canva? A video editing software?
How will you present what you’ve created?
Where will you sell your digital product? A professional website? An e-Commerce platform like Etsy, Big Cartel, Beacon or Shopify? A Course platform like Skool, Teachable, Skillshare or Kajabi?
Keyword Research – Use the internet to do a search of 10-15 relevant keywords to your product and expertise.
Marketing and Launch
Not everyone needs to launch their product. Some can create content, be it on video, graphics for social media platforms or a blog (or on platforms like X and Threads) and then link to their product be it in the captions, descriptions, social media bio, etc.
Product Pricing
What you WILL need to think about is how much you’ll charge. Many lower-end digital products start at $15 for an ebook or social media template, for example. A midrange product can be anywhere between $50 to $500 depending on your niche, service as well as the market standards.
Sales Materials
Sales materials include promotional materials like graphics, text, video, etc. Which form of media will you use? You can choose one or more. I always say, go with your strengths and passions.
Launch and Distribution
What date will you release your product? Will you have a public launch date countdown? Will there be a personal one? How will you notify your audience? What will you give to make them look forward for what you have in store for them?
Marketing Strategy:
Will you be using Content Marketing on social media such as Instagram, X, Youtube, etc.? Will you create short-form or long-form content or both? Do you enjoy writing and are thinking about an Email Newsletter Marketing Campaign? You can choose one or all of them. Go with your interests and your strengths first.
A List of Other Things to Prepare for Your Product Launch:
- Create your sales page on your chosen seller platform or website.
- Prepare Sales Materials (promotional materials like graphics, texts, videos)
- Plan Social Media Activities (teaser content, announcement, launch event)
- Allocate Advertising Budget (if you have one at this stage, if not, you can save this until you begin to make a profit if you decide to pay for advertising later on)
And there you go! You are on your journey to selling your first Digital Product!
